Choso
Choso ("house" or "home" in the Canary Islands) is a typeface inspired by the kind of symbols that can be found in the frieze section (upper part) of many 20th-century house facades of the Canary Islands, specially on single storey popular houses (known as "casas terreras") but sometimes also on two-storey manor houses.
These symbols can appear in an isolated manner or as repeating patterns, but the two kinds of display are sometimes combined. Their different shapes have been collected over a long period of time and on different islands.
The use of geometric figures to decorate facades is not exclusive to the Canarian archipelago, but this particular collection of shapes and the way of displaying them is indeed characteristic of local popular culture. Choso is a collaborative project that aims to be extended in the future with the addition of new symbols.
